All computer applications are written
in a language which computers can understand. The problem developers have always faced is
that there are many different computer platforms such as Windows, Macintosh and Unix (each
of these has different variations). This has meant that any computer program has to be
rewritten to work on each different platform.
Two years ago Sun Microsystems launched Java which can run the same
program on any platform. The majority of applications written so far have been for use on
the World Wide Web.
Java works seamlessly in the
background. When you just clinked on the Java link, a Java application automatically
checked to see whether your browser could run Java or not (those users with Java enabled
browsers have been taken to a different page.. The current Netscape and Microsoft (which can be downloaded for
free) browsers can run Java applications.
